Objective: To investigate the impact of home literacy environment and maternal verbal scaffolding on vocabulary development in children. Methods: Questionnaire of home literacy environment, narrative tasks and vocabulary tests were administered to 154 children aged 4 to 7 and their mothers. Results: ①Both home literacy environment and maternal verbal scaffolding were positively correlated to vocabulary. ②Home literacy environment significantly predicted vocabulary. Maternal verbal scaffolding mediated the relationship between home literacy environment and vocabulary. Conclusion: Home literacy environment indirectly affected vocabulary through maternal verbal scaffolding in children.
