Objective:To investigate the mediating role of parental corporal punishment in the relations between paren-tal parenting stress and internalizing problem behavior in chidren. Methods:A sample of 311 intact 2-parent Chinese fami-lies with preschoolers completed the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form, the Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scales, and the Child Behavior Check List. Results:①Mothers of boys experienced higher levels of parenting stress than mothers of girls. Mothers scored significantly higher than fathers on parental distress, while fathers reported a higher level of parent-child dysfunctional interaction. ②Paternal and maternal parenting stress was positively correlated with their own corporal punish-ment, and chidren's internalizing problem behavior. ③Maternal corporal punishment mediated the relations between mater-nal parenting stress and children's internalizing problem behavior. Conclusion:Maternal parenting stress has direct ef-fects on children's internalizing problem behavior and indirect effects through corporal punishment.
