There are quite a lot cognitive neural theories about dreaming mainly from dream's generation and function. The present review mainly presents cognitive neural mechanisms of dreaming, based on brain anatomy studies and brain imaging studies. Brain anatomy studies focused on dreams' generation, and brain imaging studies focused on dreams' cognition. According to those foregoing researches, dreaming is a function of certain brain regions mainly anchored at the occipital-temporal-parietal association cortex, prefrontal cortex and limbic system. A spontaneous EEG-fMRI technique approach and cross-cultural study may be helpful for further insight into the neurophysilogical mechanism of dreaming.
