Objective: To explore the role of cognitive style in the relationship between stress events and depressive symptoms for middle school students. Methods: Samples of 324 seventhgrade students were investigated by Children' s Depression Inventory(CDI), Children' s Cognitive Style Questionnaire and Children' s Hassles Scale(CHAS) at initial time. After that, in every 2 month interval all the scales and questionnaires were tested 4 times for the sample. Results: The hierarchical linear modeling analyses showed that cognitive style couldn' t moderate the relationship between stress life events and depressive symptoms significantly. The multilevel structure equation model analysis discovered that cognitive style also couldn' t significantly mediate the relationship of stress and depressive symptoms in seventh grade students. Conclusion: For Chinese early youths, the cognitive style may play no significant role in the relationship between stress events and depressive symptoms.
